Christopher Nolan hired Jennifer Lame to edit his recent film Tenet. Generally, Nolan’s regular editor is Lee Smith, but due to his busy schedule, Nolan hired her. Although during the editing, he warned her that this might be the most challenging movie ever to cut. Nolan surely knows she is a great editor and created some masterpieces with her editing, so why did he suggest that to Lame. In this article, we will talk about the most awaited movie Tenet, and what Christopher Nolan meant by the phrase “hardest movie to cut.” Let’s find out below.
Tenet is a spy film produced, directed, and written by Christopher Nolan. The film is a co-production between the United States and the United Kingdom. It starred Robert Pattinson, John David Washington, Dimple Kapadia, Kenneth Branagh, and Michael Caine.
Nolan took over five years to write the screenplay of the movie. The casting of the film began in March 2019, and the shooting started in May 2019. The movie was scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Picture on 26th August 2020 in the United Kingdom and on 3rd September 2020 in the United States.
Christopher Nolan, the director, and writer of the movie, conceived the Tenet’s idea twenty years ago. However, he remarked that he has been working on it for the script over six to seven years. Nolan keeps the name of the movie as Tenet, a palindrome, which means it makes the same pronunciation reading backward or forwards. The whole film is authentic and produced by Nolan’s memory. Scott R. Fisher, the special effects supervisor, watched World War II documentaries to find a reference for realism.
The film’s shooting started in May 2019 with 250 people and in seven countries, namely Italy, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, India, United States, and the United Kingdom. The filming of the movie took place in India for five days in September 2019. Nolan decided to shoot at Colaba Market, Gateway of India, Grant Road, Royal Bombay Yacht Club, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, and Breach Candy Hospital. For a plane crash sequence, Nolan thought using Visual effects (VFX), and miniatures are more costly than purchasing one real plane. So he decided to buy a Boeing 747. The sequence then filmed in an outside desert abandoned city of Palm Springs in October. The abandoned city had been constructed and a team of hundred people dressed in military camouflage costumes.
The post-production of the film is even more exciting. During the post-production period, the pandemic COVID-19 forced to delay the remaining production jobs like music, editing, etc. Hence, Goransson recorded the musicians at their homes. Lee Smith, who was the longtime editor of Nolan’s movies, got replaced by Jennifer Lame because he was occupied.
Jennifer Lame is an American film editor. She has worked with Noah Baumbach and is best known for some incredible movies like Mariage Story, Hereditary, Manchester by the Sea, and now her upcoming project is Tenet. Lame started her journey as a film editor in 2007. Her first movie was Price Check. After that, she collaborated with Baumbach for some other projects like Frances Ha, While We’re Young, Mistress America, The Meyerowitz Stories, and many more. Lame also has worked with many directors, namely Sidney Lumet, Terry George, Peter Jackson, Michael Walker, Jake Schreier, Sebastian Silva, etc.
Nolan said this in an interview with ICG Magazine that he is happy working with Jennifer Lame for the first time and shared his first meeting with her. He also shared that he joked with her when she first came that the movie might be the most challenging film to cut for any editor, and he was not sure that she would dispute that (laughs). Hence, when Nolan said, “The hardest movie any editor has ever had to cut,” that was a welcome mat to Lame’s team. Christopher was not worried about Lame’s experiences. He has watched her film, but skills and relations are two different things. In the meeting, it is more to discover if the two have common creative languages, which is precisely turned out to be the case.
On the other hand, Lame also shared that she has worked more in character-driven stories. And she had slightly felt intimidated by the action scenes. Then she began to think as action also drove the story forward. When Nolan saw that she was intimidated by the action sequence, he helped her by suggesting that story was always the driving force.
Warner Bros. Picture, the distributor of the movie, has originally scheduled Tenet to be released on 7th July 2020. But due to pandemic, it first delayed to 31st July 2020, and then further postponed to 26th August 2020 in seventy countries Italy, Japan, Germany, France, South Korea, Canada, Australia, and many more. In August 2019, Warner Bros. released the forty-second teaser to Indian showings of Joker in October. The project’s production budget is $200-225million; it is the most expensive Christopher Nolan’s movie. Although IndieWire speculated that for marketing, the budget could even push further around 300-350 million.
The Tenet is the most awaited movie of this year. Its continuously postponed dates are creating more speculations around it. We all hope we will soon witness the cinema in our nearest theatres. I hope you like the article and have a fun time reading it.
